Scarecrow Lane is returning to Cockayne! This purchase is an entry for one scarecrow in our fun community competition. Scarecrows can be funny or scary, simple or elaborate - your creativity is the only limit! Advertise your business in a fun way, or simply show off your individual creative side.
Individuals, scout groups, clubs, and businesses are all welcome to enter. All scarecrows will be displayed on the lawn of the Cockayne Farmstead with a sign identifying the sponsoring business, organization, or individual.
Prizes of $100 will be awarded in four categories: Funniest Scarecrow, Scariest Scarecrow, Most Creative Scarecrow, and People’s Choice. All but People’s Choice will be decided by our selected judges. The People’s Choice prize will be awarded to the scarecrow that brings in the most votes. Votes will be cast by the public during the event and will be one vote per $1 donation.
Each scarecrow site is approximately 6’x6’. A single 2” PVC pipe will be provided for the scarecrow post to sit in. A slightly shaved down 2×2 post works best. The holes go about 12-18” into the ground, so please keep this in mind when designing your scarecrow. The scarecrows will be out in all sorts of weather so plan accordingly and anchor all pieces securely (duct tape will not hold sufficiently when wet). Please do not use real pumpkins, corn, or any other edible items in your display, as these attract deer and other pests.
No electricity will be available for your displays, but battery illumination is encouraged so your scarecrow will be visible after dark.
Scarecrows may not include any offensive language or themes, and must be family-friendly. Politics or offensively mocking any individual person or group (there is a difference between meanness and a little light-hearted fun!) will not be allowed. The Farmstead reserves the right to remove and dispose of any scarecrow deemed to be inappropriate, hurtful, or vulgar.
Scarecrows will need to be put in place the week of October 5-11, so that they are ready for viewing by October 12. Scarecrows (and everything from your display, including straw) MUST be removed by November 6.
All proceeds from this event benefit the Cockayne Farmstead Preservation Project, a special project of the Marshall County Historical Society. Throughout the year, the Historical Society hosts educational and community building events for children and adults of all ages, in addition to preserving and maintaining one of the most unique historic buildings and collections in the state of West Virginia, right here in Marshall County.
